Sugar Land tops Fish 5-2

(Sugar Land, TX) – The Bridgeport Bluefish (3-3) were defeated by the Sugar Land Skeeters (3-3) 5-2 at Constellation Field on Tuesday afternoon to even up the seven-game season-opening series at three victories apiece. The two ballclubs play the finale of the series tomorrow evening in the Lone Star State before Bridgeport returns home for Opening Day on Friday, April 28th when they host the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs at the Ballpark at Harbor at 4:05 P.M.

Sugar Land got on the board first in the home half of the 4th inning against Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Tyler Badamo when Anthony Giansanti took a hot smash up the middle of the diamond with runners at first and second and two men out that was knocked down on the infield by Bridgeport second baseman Alberto Callaspo, but his glove hand shovel toss got away from shortstop Tony Abreu, allowing Andy Wilkins to hustle down the line from third base and score the game’s first run on the error. The Skeeters added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to 3-0. Bridgeport got back to within 3-2 in the top of the sixth on a two-out, two-run opposite field double to left center by Yefry Reyes, plating Jonathan Galvez and Daniel Fields, who led off the frame with back to back base knocks. With Reyes representing the tying-run at second, he was then picked off by Sugar Land reliever Andrew Johnston to end the threat, and the ‘Fish never recovered, as the Skeeters scored two more runs in the sixth for a 5-2 cushion. Felipe Paulino retired the side in order in the ninth for his second save of the series, preserving the win for Sugar Land Starting Pitcher Jake Hale. Jose Cuevas and Ozney Guillen each had a hit to extend their hitting streaks to six games respectively.

Hale (2-0) registered the victory, tossing five scoreless innings, allowing four hits, walking four and striking out three. Badamo (0-1) was tagged with the loss, giving up just an unearned on seven hits in four innings of work, striking out one. Galvez and Fields led the way for Bridgeport with a pair of hits each.

Bridgeport returns home for the first time in the 2017 regular season following their seven game road trip on Friday, April 28th when they host the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. First pitch on Opening Day is scheduled for 4:05. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive schedule posters presented by the Connecticut Department of Transportation. CLICK HERE for tickets.
