UB nine stomps Mercy for sixth straight win

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team ran its winning streak to six games on Saturday with a 13-5 win at Mercy College. Bridgeport is now 8-7 overall and 3-0 in East Coast Conference play. The host Mavericks fall to 5-12 overall and 0-3 in the ECC.
The Purple Knights’ bats stayed hot in the chilly weather, as the team totaled 14 hits in Saturday’s victory.
Junior Cam Overbaugh (Catskill, N.Y.) led the UB offensive attack with three hits on Saturday in five trips to the plate, plus he drove in a pair of runs, scored two runs and had two stolen bases.
Graduate student Chris Triano (Greenwich, Conn.) had two hits and two RBI for the Purple Knights in the win, and teammates Daren Grabowski (Jr. Berlin, Conn.), Casey McCone (Sr., Milford, Conn.) and Zach Burger (Grad., Orlando, Fla.) also had two hits on the day. McCone drove in two runs with his two hits, and Grabowski and Burger, each had one RBI.
On the mound, senior starter Matt Van Riper (Elmwood, Park, N.J.) pitched a strong game to even his season mark at 1-1, as he threw seven innings in which he allowed two unearned on only four hits with four strikeouts and two bases on balls.
On Sunday, the same two teams will conclude their four-game weekend series at Mercy with a single game that will start at 12 noon. Bridgeport will play as the home team in Sunday’s contest.
