BLUMENTHAL STATEMENT ON SESSIONS FAILURE TO DISCLOSE COMMUNCIATIONS WITH RUSSIAN OFFICIALS

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) released the following statement following news reports that Attorney General Sessions failed to disclose his communications with Russian officials in the months leading up to the election.

“These stunning disclosures are all the more reason – indeed, compelling evidence – that a special prosecutor is necessary to investigate Russian ties and contacts with the Trump campaign‎. I have called repeatedly for such an independent prosecutor, and now there can be no question that possible perjury and other criminal violations demand it,” Blumenthal said. “After omitting key details and providing false information in his written responses to me and other members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, we are left wondering what else is missing or misleading in his testimony. This begs serious questions about his fitness to lead the Department of Justice. Unless Attorney General Sessions can provide a credible explanation, his resignation will be necessary.”

Attorney General Sessions has claimed that he conducted meetings with Russian Ambassador as part of his duties as a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. Blumenthal is also a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and did not meet with the Russian Ambassador at all last year.

Blumenthal is also member of both the Senate Judiciary Committee, which held the confirmation hearings for Attorney General Sessions’ nomination.
