BLUMENTHAL STATEMENT ON CRUMB RUBBER TURF STATUS REPORT
Senator called for independent report in response to mounting concerns about artificial turf athletic fields and playgrounds
(Hartford) – U.S Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) released the following statement today regarding the status report issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency detailing ongoing efforts to study the safety of crumb rubber fields and playgrounds.
“Americans deserve to know whether crumb rubber turf in fields and playgrounds pose dangers to children and young athletes. Cancer and other health hazards have been linked to crumb rubber exposure—serious public health concerns that warrant comprehensive and authoritative investigation. This status report shows major progress towards answering these vital questions, but it is only the beginning of this important work. I will continue to fight for full funding and seamless continuation of this vital effort in the new administration. Families and communities are relying on these findings and we cannot afford delay.”
In January 2016, Blumenthal and Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) called on President Obama to initiate a multi-agency health study on crumb rubber turf.
