Capitol Steps coming to The Klein!
Just in time for the election of the century, political satire at its best is coming to Bridgeport. The famed Capitol Steps will perform at The Klein on Saturday, Nov. 5th at 8.p.m.
“We are very excited to have the Capitol Steps at The Klein, particularly three days before the presidential election,” said Laurence Cody, Executive Director of The Klein. They are legendary. I also think as we near the end of this election cycle people are going to want to laugh.”
If it’s anything that the Capitol Steps are adept at is making people laugh and they have been making people laugh since they first formed in 1981. Now in their 35th year, they have several troupes travelling the country yearly, a permanent gig in Washington D,C., a summertime session in the Berkshires, a national radio show and several comedy albums.
The original group that kicked off this comedy empire was a group of Senate staffers for Senator Charles Percy of Illinois. The staffers were charged with planning the entertainment for the annual Christmas party and had decided on a Nativity scene. According to the Capitol Steps website “but in the whole of Congress they couldn’t find three wise men or a virgin.
So instead the staffers decided to scan the headlines and created skits and songs and their own unique brand of political satire. There were only three Percy staffers at that original Christmas party, Elaina Newport, Jim Aidala, and the late Bill Strauss, making their tremendous success even more remarkable. And that’s how comedy history was born.
The Bridgeport show is based on songs from their current album “What To Expect When You’re Electing. This is the group’s third appearance at The Klein. Capitol Steps has performed at the landmark Bridgeport venue the last three presidential election years.
The show is constantly changing, strenuously bi-partisan, and includes songs about the election madness, as well as other things in the news, such as “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Crimea,” “Ain’t No Pipeline, Now It’s Gone,” and “The iMpossible iWatch.” In fact, this may be one of the few opportunities ever for Bridgeporters to watch Hillary Clinton belt out a show tune.
The Capitol Steps performance is just the latest in quality programs provided by the non-profit. Earlier this year The Klein hosted Loretta Swit’s one woman show as Eleanor Roosevelt in “Her Secret Journey,” another nod to politics. Proceeds from programming goes to such well-renowned programs as ASK – After School at The Klein.
Showtime for the legendary Capitol Steps is 8 p.m.
