Fish lose in matinee slugfest

Five Different Bluefish Players Record Multiple Hits In Defeat

(Bridgeport) – The Bridgeport Bluefish (15-11, 45-51) were defeated by the Sugar Land Skeeters (16-11, 51-46) 10-6 at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Wednesday afternoon to even up the three game midweek series at a victory apiece. The loss snaps Bridgeport’s four game winning streak, but the Bluefish did record ten or more hits in a single game for the 42nd time on the season.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Mike Antonini (4-7) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on six hits in just one and two-thirds innings of work, walking four, striking out one, and surrendering two home runs. Sugar Land Starting Pitcher Roy Merritt (6-2) was victorious, giving up five runs on nine hits in five innings pitched, striking out two.

Sugar Land took the early 1-0 lead against Antonini just four batters into the ballgame when Ricky Hague doubled home Jeff Dominguez with two outs after Dominguez led off the contest with a double of his own. The Skeeters widened the gap in the top half of the second inning, sending 11 batters to the plate, scoring six runs to extend the advantage to 7-0. A grand slam by Dominguez and a two-run shot by Hague both to left field off Antonin provided all of the scoring for the visitors as they enjoyed their largest lead of the afternoon.

The Bluefish began their uphill climb in the home half of the second against Merritt. An RBI groundout by Jose Gil and a run-scoring single off the bat of Angelys Nina cut the deficit to 7-2. One inning later the Bluefish got to within a pair of runs at 7-5. Welington Dotel’s RBI double plated Luis Hernandez after he led off the frame with a base knock. Two batters later Sean Burroughs doubled, allowing Dotel to cross the plate. Jonathan Galvez completed the three run rally with a run-scoring groundout that brought home Jose Cuevas. Sugar Land answered back in the top of the fifth with three more runs, giving them a five run cushion at 10-5. Rene Tosoni’s run scoring single off reliever Paul Demny scored Wilfredo Rodriguez, who was able to elude the tag of Gil, much to the dismay of Demny and Bridgeport skipper Luis Rodriguez, who both disagreed vehemently with the call made by home plate umpire Anthony Inzero, who then proceeded to eject both the ‘Fish relief pitcher and manager. After the dust settled, Delwyn Young brought home two more runs with a single, and Sugar Land was back in control. Anthony Giansanti drove home Galvez with a run-scoring single in the sixth to make it 10-6, but that was as close as the home team would get as they fell for the first time in the month of August. Hernandez, Cuevas, Burroughs, Galvez, and Giansanti led the offensive attack for Bridgeport with two hits each.
