Bluefish bounce back with 6-1 win

Adron Chambers Goes Yard, Blake Beavan Notches First Quality Start

(Bridgeport) – The Bridgeport Bluefish (25-33) defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers (29-28) 6-1 at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Tuesday night to even up the three-game series at a victory apiece. The Bluefish have now won 11 of their last 16 games overall, and improve to 12-8 in the month of June.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Blake Beavan (3-1) earned the victory, allowing just one run on six hits in six innings on the mound while striking out a season-high seven batters. Lancaster Starting Pitcher Connor Root (0-2) was tagged with the loss, surrendering two runs on four hits in three and two-thirds innings of work, walking and striking out two while giving up a home run.

Bridgeport got things started offensively by putting up two runs in the bottom of the third inning off Root, as Bluefish newcomer Adron Chambers went deep for the first time this season with a solo shot to right field. Welington Dotel was driven home four batters later by Jose Cuevas for the second run after he laced his seventh double of the season, giving the ‘Fish a 2-0 lead. Lancaster would get back a run in the top half of the fourth, as Sean Halton cracked his league-leading fifth triple of the 2016 campaign, sending Josh Bell home to cut the Barnstormers deficit in half at 2-1.

The Bluefish would add an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth, as Chambers led off the rally with a triple into the gap in left centerfield. Chambers would cross the plate on a sacrifice fly by Luis Hernandez, giving Bridgeport a two-run cushion for the second time on the night as the score was now 3-1 in favor of the home team. With the 3-1 advantage in tact, a Bluefish relief effort of Eric Niesen, Paul Demny, and R.J. Hively would proceed to collectively retire the next eight Lancaster batters and allow only one more hit in the ballgame. Meanwhile, Bridgeport’s offense kept working, as the first five batters reached base in the bottom of the eighth inning, with three coming home, to give the game its final score of 6-1. Luis Rodriguez contributed with a two-run double, driving in Endy Chavez who walked and Cuevas who had a two-base hit of his own. Dotel led the offensive efforts for the Bluefish on the evening, racking up three hits in four at-bats and crossing the plate twice. The outfielder recorded his sixth multi-hit game of the season and third three-hit game for the ‘Fish, extending his hitting streak to four consecutive games in the process.
