McCone's ninth inning blast gives Purple Knights 4-3 win in season opener
Myrtle Beach, S.C.-Junior Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.) drove the first pitch of the bottom of the ninth inning from reliever Brad Scull deep over the centerfield wall to give the University of Bridgeport baseball team and exciting 4-3 walk-off win over the Wilmington (Del.) University Wildcats on Friday afternoon in the 2016 season opener for both teams.
McCone’s blast made a winner of junior Denis Lyman (Kingston, N.Y.), who got the final out of the top of ninth for UB stranding a runner on third. Earlier in the game, Casey also singled and scored a run to finish the season opener going 2-for-4 with one RBI and a run scored.
UB junior Cam Overbaugh (Catskill, N.Y.) highlighted an eight-hit offensive attack going 3-for-4 at the plate with a stolen base and a run scored.
The Purple Knights also got runs batted in the victory from sophomore Jose Negron (New Haven, Conn.) and senior Alec Jannotta (Branford, Conn.).
Bridgeport will continue its season-opening weekend in South Carolina with two games on Saturday facing Franklin Pierce University at 1:00 p.m. and Concordia (N.Y.) University at 4:00 p.m.
