Neighborhood welcomes thriving new business The Black Rock Store

At last, a store in Bridgeport has been named after its own neighborhood. The Black Rock Store, which recently joined the ranks of Park City businesses, is celebrating its grand opening at its convenient location in the heart of Black Rock at 2948 Fairfield Avenue.

The store is the brain child of owner Edner Lors, who is probably a familiar face to many Black Rockers. Lors operated the UPS Store in Fairfield for years, which was very popular with neighborhood residents as there were no adequate shipping facilities in the Rock.

With the opening of The Black Rock Store, that is no longer the case.

“I’ve been in the shipping business for more than 20 years and when I saw that a one stop shipping location was needed in this neighborhood it was a no-brainer,” explained the owner. “I thought it was a natural fit.”

The Black Rock Store offers a variety of shipping services including being an authorized Federal Express shipping agent. However, shipping is only one element of the variety of products and services offered by the new establishment.

“I actually got a lot of my ideas for our inventory from my customers,” said Lors. “I listened to their suggestions and realized that there are a lot of products that are simply unavailable in Black Rock. People from around here have been forced to drive into Fairfield and other places simply to get things that they need.”

The owner added, “We are actually still a work in progress. I listen to people’s ideas and if they are feasible I will add their suggestion to our list of items.”

The list of items available at The Black Rock Store is seemingly endless so it would be impossible for this writer to even attempt such a task. In fact, another name for the outlet could easily be The Everything Store.

However, here are some of the products that the discerning Black Rock shopper can purchase at the new store. There are baby items, candy, cleaning products, novelty items. Housewares, hardware, hair care and cosmetic items, toys as well as plastic kitchenware items... The list goes on ad infinitum and is being added to every week. For good measure, throw in the fact that Edner Lors is also a notary public.

“We really are trying to be a one stop store and we are always listening to our customers,” said Lors. “That is why we truly hope to be very successful in this location.”

Black Rock residents are long accustomed to having to travel outside of their neighborhood for goods and services that are available nearly everywhere else. Dry cleaning and banking are two that come to mind rather quickly. In fact, there was not even a traditional grocery store until Stop & Shop opened its doors a few years back.

The Black Rock Store should go a long to filling the void. The store’s hours are 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday. It is closed on Sunday. For more info give Edner a call at 203-690-1541.
