Purple Knights sweep ECC awards


U.B. Soccer has big week versus Molloy and St. Thomas Aquinas

Central Islip, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport men’s soccer team has swept this week’s East Coast Conference men’s soccer weekly awards after going 2-0 last week post road win at St. Thomas Aquinas (2-0) and Molloy (5-1). Junior forward Luka Ivanovic (Belgrade, Serbia) was named the ECC’s Offensive Player of the Week, freshman goalkeeper Daniel Coviella (Ribadesella, Spain) earned Conference Defensive Player of the Week accolades and freshman Klyde Jacques (Baldwin, N.Y.) was selected as the ECC Rookie of the Week.

Ivanovic was a one-man wrecking crew on offense for Bridgeport, scoring four goals with one assist on the week for a total of nine points in a pair of key ECC road wins for the Purple Knights. In a 2-0 win at St. Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday, he scored one goal, and he followed that up with a hat trick and an assist in a 5-1 win at Molloy on Saturday. On the season, he leads Bridge­port in scoring with 16 points on seven goals and two assists.

Coviella picked up both wins for the Purple Knights last week, allowing only one goal in 172:57 of action. He made a total of 11 saves, including six in a 2-0 shutout at St. Thomas Aquinas and five in a 5-1 win at Molloy.

Jacques was instrumental in helping UB to a pair of key ECC road wins last week, scoring one goal and adding an assist for his first points of 2015. In a 2-0 win at St. Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday, Klyde scored his team’s insur­ance goal, and in a 5-1 win at Molloy, making his first start of the season, he chipped in an assist.

This week, the Bridgeport men’s soccer team will close out its 2015 regular season with a road trip to Western New York to face Roberts Wesleyan College on Friday and Daemen College on Sunday.
