Buttonwood Tree is a an Art Center located at 605 Main Street, in Middletown, CT. Musicians from across the globe have praised The Buttonwood Tree's authentically restored, sweet-sounding baby grand 1908 Steinway piano, and Phoebe is looking forward to this experience.
Phoebe’ Legere is a Native American/French Canadian/Mayflower descendent who will “take your breath away” (NPR) with her “magnificent vocals” (NY Post) and “virtuoso musicianship.” (NY Times) She plays piano, accordion, Native American flute and guitar. This “superb singer” and “master of New Orleans blues piano and Harlem stride” picks up her accordion and strolls through the audience while playing Edith Piaf classics and Cajun traditional dance tunes, always adding a little classic Acadian step dancing to the mix. She has been called the “Must See to End All Must Sees.” (WSJ).
The morning after she opened for David Bowie on his National Tour, 1991, Phoebe went into the NPR studios with Studs Terkel to be interviewed.
Sitting next to Phoebe at the piano, Studs called out requests: from “Lush Life” to “Autumn Leaves” to “ My Yiddish Mama” to “Black Bottom Blues.” Studs called Phoebe “An American Original…fun, funny and smart.” He said, “She’s a beauty, but the main thing about her is that she is good. Very, very good.”
This is a unique opportunity to see an artist with a classic, traditional background, whose family goes back centuries in New England, and who has never compromised.
Downtown Art Magazine says, “Her paintings draw aside the veil of illusion, lifting the beholder into intimate communion with the Divine."
Legere has performed thousands of shows from Country Fairs to NPR, from Folk Festivals to the Pow Wow circuit, from Songwriter Circles to a CBS Sunday Morning feature when she won First Runner-Up in “America’s Hottest Accordionist Contest” in Branson, MO. She has played with Joni Mitchell, David Bowie, Billy Joel, Steve Martin and John Hartford and she was once the girlfriend of Hunter Thompson.
Phoebe Legere’s new Americana CD “Heart of Love” is, this week, #28 on the ROOTS Americana chart…with praises from WICN-Worcester’s Nick Noble, who called Heart of Love, "one of the most intriguing, exciting albums I've heard this year." Celebrity Cafe writes: “She has fearless inspiring artistic integrity." The New York Times compared her to Jerry Lee Lewis, Edith Piaf and Marilyn Monroe.
Ms. Legere has released 12 CDs of original and traditional music available on iTunes and Spotify.
Phoebe Legere is driving across the country in her “VISIONARY” VAN, which is loaded with Art and Music. She is fundraising and fun-raising for her 501 (c)(3) non profit organization: Foundation For New American Art (4NAA) that is dedicated to bringing art and music to underserved children in low-income communities.
